Teacher Writing | How to Cultivate Students' Sense of Gratitude?
Shared :

Due to the influence of the social environment, many parents love their children too much and put their children first in their family. Other members of the family must take their children's interests first. Students who grow up in such a long-term doting environment only get unlimited satisfaction of material conditions but losing the chance to develop the sense of gratitude. In my class, there were students who did not know how to be grateful.

Case 1: One Friday afternoon, a boy did not want to go home by school bus, but wanted to call his parents and asked them to pick him up. But the student's home is far away from our school, and it takes nearly two hours to drive on the highway.

Case 2: One day, when a teacher taught a student during the class  break, that student showed anger.

Case 3: During the break, two students quarreled with each other over a small matter, complained about each other, and counted each other's shortcomings.

Seeing the above phenomena, I deeply feel that it is urgent to give my students gratitude education. Gratitude is a kind of life attitude; it is the simplest moral principle of being a social person. However, today, quite several students lack of a grateful thought and become indifferent and selfish. This is a problem worthy of social concern. We need to regain the gratitude of students, not only through emotional infiltration and imperceptible education, but also through the efforts of families, schools and society to create a good cultural atmosphere.

However, I found that gratitude education is not so easy. Children will have the following situations: some children have superior living conditions, and parents either love them too much or have no time to company them. When children have requirements, some parents choose to respond to whatever they ask for, without asking for returns, so that children feel adults should unconditionally meet their needs, without any sense of gratitude, just like the boy in Case 1 above; Some children do not know how to appreciate the teacher's contributions to them. Sometimes the teacher's kind reminders make them feel that it is the teacher's nagging and criticism. They confront with teachers and form a hostile relationship with teachers, just like the boy in Case 2 above; Some children do not know how to be grateful to their classmates. They have too much negative energy. They always see the shortcomings of their classmates and are prone to conflict with them; Some children do not know how to be grateful to the society and people around them. For example, worker who serve us in the canteen and the sanitation workers who help us clean on the road. Some children do not know how to appreciate others' contributions to the society. The situations encountered are complicated, and just shouting slogans can hardly make much difference.

In view of the above situation, in addition to verbal reminders, I also used the following measures in the class to improve students' sense of gratitude:

1. Hold thanksgiving class meetings regularly. Share some real cases about gratitude, and let students learn, discuss and share their opinions. In the case study, the students really feel what gratitude is from the example, and know how to do it.

2. Spend 5 minutes every day to let students think about the people they want to thank to and share in class. When they think about this every day, it actually buries the seed of gratitude in the students' hearts. I believe that this seed can take root and sprout in the students' hearts.

3. Add the content of thanksgiving education in the discipline education. Education can be carried out in combination with the content of the subject, or special education can be carried out. For example, I will broadcast some English videos about gratitude in English class, and let students discuss and share the videos. One day in my English class, I showed a father donating money to an institution for the disabled in the name of his child, and then the father was always poor. At first, his child did not understand his father. When he grew up, the child knew the situation and was moved by his father's behavior. He continued to give back to the society instead of his father. After watching the video, the students in the class were very moved. They understood how much we have gained in the society and should find ways to repay the society.

4. Communicate with parents and give gratitude education to children at home. Let children know how to repay to their parents. Parents also agree with the concept of teachers and actively cooperate with education at home.

5. Start from the small things that students get along with each other, and make gratitude education deeply rooted in students’ hearts. When students are in conflict, we should seize the opportunity to educate in a timely manner, so that students can know how to care for people around them, how to respect each other and be modest.

After a period of persistence, I was surprised to find that the children in our class have changed a lot: children begin to understand their parents' hard work, they know how to care for their families, and begin to give back; The children know how to respect the teacher, be grateful for the teacher's efforts, they are respectful and polite to the teacher; Children get along more harmoniously. They understand the advantages of each other, explore the strengths of others, appreciate each other, and reduce conflicts; While enjoying the social giving, think about how to serve the society, such as participating in volunteer activities.

I will always strengthen the sense of gratitude to children. It is a philosophy of life, but also the wisdom of life.
