If I could Solve a Problem in the Current World

Hello, everyone. My name is Amelia. It’s my honor to be here to make the speech. My topic is “If I could solve a problem in the current world, I really hope that everyone can eat animals less and less, eventually become a vegetarian”.

In 1789, Malthus published his famous book Theory of Population. In his opinion, the world's population must be constrained by the growth of food. But in modern times, the world population has exceeded 7.5 billion, and there is no absolute food shortage. This is due to the development of agriculture and breeding industry., so that less land can support more people.

While our food is richer and cheaper, but we have not ever thought about the logic behind the production of these foods. When we eat meat, do we think about the owners of the meat we eat, their living environment, their health, and whether they are willing to become our food?

Have you ever seen the living environment of chickens in the farm? They live in layered cages, which usually have 3 to 9 layers. The highest record in Japan reached 18 layers; The activity space of each chicken is so small, maybe slightly smaller than a piece of A4 paper. In such a space, almost all chickens can only eat feed, lay eggs or grow meat.

If human beings must eat animals, they must be humane and treat other lives in the world with respect and humility. No matter when raising or slaughtering, animals should not suffer unnecessary pain. However, the animals on industrial farms are fed with a lot of antibiotics, changed genes, abused, and can only live in narrow cages without fresh air and blue sky. We have deprived animals of their lives for food. We should give them better living conditions than in the wild and slaughter them cleanly.

In a way, there is no doubt that industrial farms are extremely inhumane models. Moreover, we are well aware that the way we treat other lives has far-reaching implications. Our attitude towards industrial farms is a test to see how we will do when faced with small, remote and silent groups and no one compels us. At present, what we need is not a long-term solution, but a direct face to this problem and depend on our conscience.
