To Motivate Students by Using Body Language

        All students wish to do well and make progress in their study. When a student encounters difficulty in his study, what he needs the most is encouragement and help. It has been proved that students can sense the happiness of accomplishment and become motivated from the teacher’s affirmative remarks, appreciative smile, or a gesture of satisfaction.The following is about to motivate students by using body language.

        In comparison with oral language, body language may have multiple interpretations and uncertainty. As a result, it will often give a hint to the students. For example, when a student who has strong self-esteem makes a mistake, if the teacher give him a trusting look, his spirits will probably be kept up so that he could correct his mistake. However, if the teacher gives him a despising look, the student may feel frustrated and show no interest in learning. As a result, the teacher, when managing classroom teaching, may use more positive body language rather than repetitive sermon-like language to influence the students and to patiently help students finish their tasks in learning. For example, when the student stands up, he may not be able to answer the question due to shyness, nervousness, or uncertainty. At this time, if the teacher looks at the student expectantly, give some hint smilingly, or suggest other students to answer together. In this way, the student will no longer feel nervous. The teacher should avoid putting on a poker’s face or admonishing the students when they failed to answer a question. On the contrary, the teacher should lead students to greater success through positive emotional exchange.
