Reading month is a time for all staff and students in GIC to share their love of reading.  “100 Years of History” A perfect theme to celebrate the 100th Anniversary for our Huamei GIC Middle School students. GIC curated a short book list of high interest reading for middle school students including Red Star Over China by Edgar Snow, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and The Last Cherry Blossom by Kathleen Burkinshaw.  We kicked off reading month by handing out GIC Reading Month Bookmarks.

 Students read all month and received a token for their GIC house each time they completed a report. In addition, we had highlighted programs like: “Quote This”.  Students and teachers chose their favorite quotes from their books and made a shirt. On April 23, they wore their shirts to school and used them to spark discussion throughout the GIC hallways.

“Leave a Legacy” book swap was a chance for students to demonstrate service by choosing a book from their bookshelves and giving it to a student in a lower class.  The GIC primary students received a special delivery of books and had a great opportunity to discuss life in middle school with our current GIC graduating 9th graders.  This was a true showing of Respect and Integrity from our students and a tradition that I hope lasts into the future.
