Author: 初二剑桥班英语教师 蒋旭

More and more students are keen on takingpart in Cambridge English test. However, they come across some difficulties whenthey prepare for the tests, such as new words, culture difference in spoken andwritten English. In the Cambridge English program, teachers work hard to helpthem overcome the difficulties and build their confidence.

Teaching students of Cambridge Englishprogram has been a new experience for me. In my class, students are eager toimprove their English. They have at least a period learning with the foreignteacher whose native language is English every day. When the foreign teacher isteaching the language, students are encouraged to respond to the teacher inEnglish. In this way, they can improve their listening and speaking throughhaving conversations with their foreign teacher. Meanwhile, they can learnsomething interesting from the foreign teacher. The more they talk to theforeigners, the more confidently they can speak English.

It’s a big challenge to be a ChineseEnglish teacher in this program, as I’m required to speak English as much aspossible during my teaching. I believe I can make much progress at the end ofthis term.

This term, I instructed my students to preparefor PET. Sometimes it is difficult to deal with listening materials. On onehand, there are usually some key words which are new to the students and theycannot understand the context correctly. On the other hand, students are notable to eliminate the misleading information and identify the right informationfrom a great deal of information. Based on this, I told students to pay moreattention to the words like however andbut, after which it usually follows the correct answers. Students are also taught to preview the materials before listening. Vocabulary and collocationare undoubtedly essential to the listening and reading as well, but it reallytakes time and hard work to memorize them and enlarge them. Thus, my students arerequired to keep a notebook of the new words and phrases. When they meet newwords or phrases, they need to write them down. Sometimes after listening, students work in pairs to discuss more about the topic of the listening, whichis also one part of the Speaking in PET.

As we all know, reading ability is crucialin learning language. Reading different types of passages can help them learnmore culture about other countries and improve their English through Cambridgetest. For different types of text, different strategies are offered to studentsto follow, which can help them read effectively and solve the problems quickly. It’s a great help if students are able to grasp the main idea by identifyingthe topic sentences. For some passages, students need to work out the logical relationof the sentences so that they can fully understand the context. Besides, students are told to stick to the information provided in the context insteadof following what they take for granted.

This term, I learned with my studentsand I’m proud of their achievement. In a word, I will keep learning and helpstudents learn English better. I’m looking forward to learning with them in the following term.
