Everyday of our lives we are constantly reading and writing. Despite the explosion of smartphone usage, reading and writing is the same. It might be more advanced today but its still the same. Rather it be scrolling through an article or news event on our phone or writing a text message to our friend, reading and writing is the same. Written communication is just one form of communication, albeit an important one. In examining the reasons that communication is important, one may look more deeply and understand how each can be accomplished, in part, through effective writing – whether in emails, letters, social media posts, memos, newsletters, etc. For example, a badly worded letter, spelling mistakes, miscommunicated ideas, and careless grammatical errors are enough to go from an A to F. Reading is one of the most important skills a child can learn because it would be difficult to master any subject without knowing how to read. Reading is an important skill because it helps us in school, helps us understand life outside of school, and finally, it develops one’s imagination and creativity. GIC students learn and master these two skills. In our journalism classes students create, design and write their own magazines.

By creating their own magazine, students in GIC can exhibit their writing skills, reading skills and showcase their imagination. A main topic GIC students like to write about is student life. Students love writing about their daily studies and how they are adjusting to life on campus. Another topic students love to discuss is their favorite teacher. GIC students also showcase their knowledge of the outside world; students love to write about current events taking place around the world.

Letting GIC students create their own magazine is not only a great way for them to become better readers and writers, but also a great way to expand their minds. Creativity has shaped the world. At GIC, we don’t want kids to be just great, but also express creativity through dignity, honor, integrity and respect.
